The embankment of the Lokayan River passing through the western region of the Hilsa subdivision in Nalanda district, Bihar, broke on Saturday night around 3 AM. This breach has led to widespread flooding in over half a dozen nearby villages.
The administration, led by Sub-Divisional Officer Praveen Kumar, is actively involved in rescue operations, ensuring that affected residents are moved to safer locations. District Magistrate Shashank Shubhankar has also inspected the damaged embankment to assess the situation.
The embankment, situated in the north-west of Hilsa block near Dhuri Bigha, experienced a significant erosion of about 30 feet. The heavy rainfall in Jharkhand, where the river originates, has caused cracks in several places along the embankment, especially in the Hilsa and Ekangarasrai block areas. As a result, river water has inundated the western regions, affecting villages such as Dhuri Bigha, Muraligarh, Phulwaria, Sohrapur, Kuseta, and Chhayasath Bigha.
Due to the breach near Ghana Bigha village, water has flooded the villages and fields of Beldari Bigha and Ghana Bigha. The authorities are actively evacuating people from their homes and relocating them to relief camps. Essential supplies like chura (flattened rice) and jaggery are being distributed to the flood-affected residents. According to local villagers, this is the most severe flooding they have witnessed since 2016.
